The People are Heroes

the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow

when we look up
the fields are white
the fields are white with harvest in the morning light
and mountain ranges one by one
rise red beneath our harvest moon
and mountain ranges one by one
rise red beneath our harvest moon
rise red beneath our harvest moon
when we look up
mountain ranges rise beneath beneath the moon and fields are white

the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow
the people are the heroes now behemoth pulls the peasants' plow

This music is part of the soundtrack to the computer game Civilization 4. I think it's great. It's from the opera "Nixon in China" (available from amazon.com). It's being performed in Portland in Spring 2006.

Once There Was A Witch

Once there was a witch
In a castle she did dwell
A young magician courted her
And caught her with his spell

So she became a deer
A deer deep in the wood
And he became a hunter bold
And shot her where she stood

Then she became a star
A star all in the night
And he became a thunder-cloud
And hid her clear from sight

There are more verses but I have lost them. Can anyone help me find the extra verses, please? If you know the rest, or know where to find it, please email me.

In the version I read as a child, they fell in love and got married. There is a book by Barefoot Books in which the witch commits suicide and lies in her grave, smug at having outwitted the magician. What a horrible ending! I want my old ending back!
